Monte Cristo Sandwich

Who doesn’t love this ham, and cheese sandwich dipped in an egg mixture and fried for a luxurious lunch or brunch? We find the Monte Crisco sandwich recipe in numerous American cookbook as far back as the 1930s. It was often called the French Toasted Ham and Cheese sandwich.

Serves 4 | Prep time 10 minutes | Cook time 15 minutes


1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

⅔ cup water

1 egg

⅔ cup all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

8 slices white bread

4 tablespoons mayonnaise

4 teaspoons strawberry jam

12 slices ham

4 slices Swiss cheese

1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar for dusting (optional)


Heat the oil to 365°F in a saucepan or deep fryer. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the egg and the water.

Stir in the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper, and whisk until smooth.

Lay out the bread slices, and spread half a tablespoon of mayonnaise on each.

Layer 3 slices of ham and top with one slice of Swiss cheese. Top with remaining bread slices, mayonnaise side down.

Cut the sandwiches into two, and secure each with a toothpick.

Dip each sandwich into the batter, making sure to coat all sides. Fry in the oil until they are golden brown on all sides.

Dust with confectioners’ sugar before serving if desired.
